About – Derek “Del” Chambers

Calm, one-to-one dog walking and in-home pet care in Finchley and Muswell Hill

Derek Chamber s- Dog Walker and pet sitter, finchley

Hi, I’m Derek, although most people know me as Del.

I’m the person behind Finchley Dog Walker. I provide calm, one-to-one dog walking and in-home pet care in Finchley, Muswell Hill, and nearby North London areas.

This is a small local business. It’s me you speak to, me who comes to the meet and greet, and me who walks your dog or looks after your pets. That consistency matters, especially for dogs who need time, routine, and a calmer approach.

I do not offer group walks. I do not use vans. Everything is local, on foot, and built around what your dog or pet actually needs.

How Finchley Dog Walker began

Finchley Dog Walker started after I was made redundant from a previous career.

At that point, I had a choice. I could go back into office work that never really suited me, or I could build something around what had always come naturally to me, caring for animals.

I chose the second option.

More than a decade later, I’m still here, still working locally, and still helping dogs and owners who need something a bit more personal than the usual pack-walk model.

This has never been about building a high-volume business. It has always been about offering steady, reliable care that feels calm, practical, and right for the dog in front of me.

A lifelong connection with animals

Animals were always part of life growing up.

We had small pets, birds, and larger breeds too, including German Shepherds. Looking after them was just part of everyday life. Feeding, cleaning, handling, walking, and learning how different animals behave all started there.

Looking back, that early experience shaped a lot of how I work now. I learned to watch body language, notice stress, and build trust quietly rather than trying to force things.

That still runs through everything I do today.

Why I work the way I do

My approach is simple.

I keep things calm.
I keep things local.
I keep things one to one.

That means:

  • no group walks
  • no vans or cars
  • no rushing dogs from one collection to the next
  • no expecting every dog to cope with the same plan

Some dogs need exercise. Some need decompression. Some need help building confidence. Some just need a familiar route with someone they know.

I work on foot, from your front door, using local routes and green spaces. For a lot of dogs, especially rescue dogs, nervous dogs, older dogs, and dogs who get overwhelmed easily, that makes a real difference.

Rescue dogs are a big part of my work

prepare for a rescue dog

All of my own adult dogs have been rescues, and that has had a huge influence on how I work.

Rescue dogs often come with a history. That might mean uncertainty, poor early experiences, over-arousal, lack of confidence, or simply finding the world a bit too much at first.

They do not always thrive in busy group walks or high-pressure settings.

Living with rescue dogs teaches you patience. It teaches you that progress is rarely neat. It teaches you that trust is built through consistency, not force.

Because of that, I naturally work with a lot of dogs who need more thoughtful handling, including:

  • newly adopted rescue dogs
  • nervous or anxious dogs
  • dogs who struggle in group settings
  • older dogs who need a slower pace
  • dogs who simply do better one to one

The dogs and pets I usually help

My services are often a good fit for:

  • dogs who do not cope well in group walks
  • rescue dogs still settling in
  • dogs who react or get overwhelmed on walks
  • puppies needing routine and short visits
  • older dogs who need a slower, steadier approach
  • cats who are happiest staying in their own home
  • households who want familiar, in-home care rather than kennels or boarding

I also support the wider household through house sitting, cat sitting, puppy visits, and other in-home pet care.

Experience, checks, and ongoing learning

This work is personal to me, but it is also professional.

I believe owners should be able to see clearly who they are trusting with their pets and their homes.

I am:

  • enhanced DBS checked via The Scout Association
  • fully insured
  • trained in Level 3 Ofqual regulated canine first aid
  • experienced with rescue, nervous, and sensitive dogs

I also keep building my knowledge through practical learning and behaviour-focused approaches, including:

  • Tellington TTouch
  • Reactive Rascals
  • Calmness Rocks

Local, reliable, and personal

Finchley is not just where I work. It is part of my day-to-day life.

I keep my service area fairly tight because that helps me stay reliable, keeps walks local, and means dogs are not spending unnecessary time travelling.

It also means I get to know the streets, green spaces, routines, and households properly.

That local focus is a big part of what people value. They are not booking a franchise or a rotating team. They are choosing a local service built on familiarity, trust, and consistency.

I’m also involved in the local community through the Scouts and the East Finchley Festival team, which reflects the same values that shape how I work: reliability, responsibility, patience, and showing up properly.

Why owners choose Finchley Dog Walker

People usually come to me because they are not looking for a busy, high-volume dog walking service.

They want:

  • the same person each time
  • calm, one-to-one care
  • local walks without vans
  • someone used to rescue and sensitive dogs
  • clear, honest communication
  • support that works around their dog, not the other way round

If your dog loves fast-paced pack walks and lots of stimulation, I may not be the right fit.

But if your dog needs steadier, more thoughtful care, there is a good chance I can help.

Meet and greets

Choosing someone to care for your dog or pet is a big decision.

That is why I offer an initial meet and greet before ongoing care starts. It gives us a chance to talk through your pet’s routine, background, temperament, and needs, and it helps us both decide whether the fit feels right.
