Where We Walk in Finchley and North London
Table of contents
I’m lucky. This part of North London is packed with green space.
And when you’re walking a dog one-to-one, that matters.
It means we can choose routes that suit your dog, not whatever happens to be convenient for a group. Some dogs want quiet woodland paths. Some prefer open spaces. Some need predictable routes and a bit of distance.
I keep walks local and familiar where possible. We start from your front door, on foot.
If you’re looking for calm one-to-one dog walking in Finchley and nearby areas, these are a few of the places we enjoy most.
What I look for in a good walking spot
A “good walk” isn’t always the busiest park.
For most dogs, especially rescues and nervous dogs, it helps to have:
- space to sniff and decompress
- quieter paths (or quieter times of day)
- clear routes that don’t force close greetings
- safe lead handling near people, bikes, and wildlife
I’m happy to keep dogs on a lead when that’s the safest choice. I’d rather have a calm walk than a stressful one. Find out more by visiting my solo dog walk page
Places where we walk
Highgate Wood
Highgate Wood is one of those places that feels like a proper escape without being far away.
It’s an ancient woodland, so there are lots of different smells, textures, and routes. That makes it brilliant for sniffing and gentle enrichment.
A couple of things to know:
- It can get busy, especially at weekends and during school holidays
- It’s a family park, so we stay mindful of children and other visitors
- It’s often a better place for dogs who are comfortable being on a lead in busier spaces
If your dog is reactive or easily overwhelmed, I’ll usually pick quieter routes and quieter times, or choose a calmer alternative.
Coldfall Wood (East Finchley / Muswell Hill)
Coldfall Wood is a favourite for calm woodland walks.
It’s not huge, but it has that “proper woods” feel, with lots of little paths and places to pause. It’s ideal for dogs who do best with:
- predictable routes
- slower, sniffier walks
- fewer intense face-to-face encounters
It’s also a great option if your dog is building confidence, because you can keep the walk simple and steady.
Dollis Brook and the Dollis Valley Greenwalk
This is a really nice choice when you want a longer, more open walk without feeling like you’re stuck in the middle of a busy park.
The Dollis Valley Greenwalk follows the brook, offering a “green corridor” feel. It’s especially handy for:
- dogs who enjoy a steady pace
- dogs who benefit from having space around them
- owners who want their dog walked somewhere that isn’t just the same small loop
It’s the kind of place where you can have a calm walk and still feel like you’ve had a proper outing.
A note about off-lead walking
Some dogs love off-lead time. Some don’t need it. Some can’t do it safely.
I don’t treat off-lead as a default.
I look at the dog in front of me, the environment, and what’s happening on the day. With many dogs (especially rescues and reactive dogs), a calm lead walk with sniffing, space, and steady handling is the best option. Check out my services
