Going away does not mean you need to fill your home with complicated cat technology.
Most cats need something much simpler: familiar food, clean water, tidy litter trays, safe enrichment and a reliable person checking them regularly.
The right products can make holiday care easier. They can help maintain feeding times, provide backup water, reduce competition between cats and make your sitter’s routine clearer.
They cannot notice that your cat has stopped eating, become unwell, knocked over a bowl or become trapped behind a closed door.
That is why I see the products in this guide as support for good cat care rather than replacements for a responsible cat sitter.

That is not how I recommend using them.
A feeder may dispense food at the correct time, but it cannot confirm that your cat ate it. A fountain may continue circulating water, but pumps can stop, and bowls can become dirty. A camera may show your cat asleep, but it cannot clean the litter tray or investigate an unusual smell.
Cats Protection recommends arranging regular visits while you are away, with kittens, older cats and cats with health conditions potentially needing more frequent attention.
My own approach is based on proper visits that can include:
- feeding
- refreshing water
- washing bowls
- litter-tray care
- agreed medication
- calm company
- play and enrichment
- basic home checks
- general welfare observations
- photographs and updates

Technology is most useful when it adds another layer of support to this routine.
Best automatic cat feeder for wet food

The Cat Mate C500 is one of the more practical options for cats that normally eat wet food.
It has five food compartments. One can be available immediately, with the remaining compartments opening at programmed times.
Reusable ice packs sit underneath the food tray to help keep food cooler for part of the day. The bowl and lid can also be removed for cleaning.
This can be helpful when:
- your cat normally eats several smaller meals
- a sitter visits once or twice but feeding times fall between visits

I would not fill it with several days of wet food and assume everything will remain fresh.

You need enough freezer space for the ice packs.
Your sitter must understand how to programme, fill and clean it. Some determined cats may also investigate the lid, so test it carefully before relying on it.

Best smart feeder for dry cat food
Catit PIXI Smart Dry Food Feeder
For cats that already eat dry food, the Catit PIXI Smart Dry Food Feeder offers more control than a basic gravity dispenser.
It allows scheduled portions to be programmed through the Catit app. The feeder has an airtight reservoir, a stainless-steel feeding dish and backup battery power.
This may suit:
- cats that eat several measured dry-food meals
- owners who want feeding notifications
- cats that need controlled portions
- households where routine feeding times matter
- owners who want to trigger an occasional feed remotely
The ability to dispense food remotely is convenient, but it should not encourage extra feeding simply because you have checked the camera and your cat looks persuasive.
Measure your cat’s total daily food allowance and programme the feeder around that amount.
What I like
A backup power option is valuable. It reduces the chance that a brief power cut will interrupt the feeding schedule.
The stainless-steel dish is also easier to keep hygienic than a deeply scratched plastic bowl.
What to consider
This model is for dry food.
Check that your cat’s normal kibble size is compatible with the dispenser. Small or unusually shaped pieces can sometimes dispense inconsistently in automatic feeders.

- you want both manual controls and an app

As with the Cat Mate feeder, the ice packs do not make wet food safe indefinitely. The feeder still needs regular cleaning and fresh food.
The extra technology is useful only when it makes the routine easier. A simpler feeder may be more dependable for owners who do not need app controls.

Best feeder for multi-cat homes

A timed feeder does not solve every feeding problem.
In some homes, the main difficulty is that one cat steals another cat’s food.

- cats eat different diets
- one cat eats much faster than another

This is not primarily a timed feeder.
It controls who can access the food rather than when it is served.
Cats must also be introduced gradually. The moving lid may worry a nervous cat at first, so use the training mode and allow plenty of time.
Do not install it two days before your flight and expect your cat to understand it immediately.

Best water fountain for cats
Catit PIXI Drinking Fountain
Some cats enjoy drinking from moving water. A fountain can also provide a larger water reserve than a small bowl.

It may be useful for:

A fountain needs more cleaning than many owners expect.
Hair, food, saliva and mineral deposits can collect around the pump and filter. Your sitter needs clear instructions about topping it up and what to do if it stops.
Introduce it while you are home. Some cats drink from a fountain immediately. Others avoid it until they have had time to investigate.

Always leave ordinary water bowls as backup
I would never leave a fountain as your cat’s only source of water.
Electric pumps can stop. Power supplies can be unplugged. Filters can become blocked. A nervous cat may decide that the fountain is suspicious.
Set out several sturdy water bowls in separate locations.
PDSA recommends providing enough essential resources for the cats in a household, generally one per cat plus an additional spare. Food, water, sleeping areas and litter facilities should also be spread around the home rather than crowded together.
Wide ceramic or stainless-steel bowls are often practical because they are stable and straightforward to clean.
Avoid placing every water source beside the food bowl. Many cats prefer drinking water positioned away from food and litter areas.

Best camera for checking your cat

You do not necessarily need an expensive camera marketed specifically for pets.
A straightforward indoor security camera such as the Tapo C210 can provide:
- remote live viewing
- pan and tilt controls
- night vision
- motion alerts
- local memory-card storage
- privacy controls

Place it where your cat normally eats, rests or walks through the room.
What a camera is good for
A camera may reassure you that your cat has appeared for breakfast or is sleeping in their usual place.
It may also help you notice that a feeder has not dispensed, another animal has entered through the cat flap or a water bowl has been knocked over.
What a camera cannot tell you
It cannot reliably assess your cat’s health.
A cat sitting quietly may be relaxed, frightened or unwell. You cannot smell vomit, inspect the litter tray or confirm that a room has become dangerously warm through an ordinary camera view.
I would also avoid repeatedly using the speaker to call your cat. Hearing your voice without being able to find you may confuse or unsettle some cats.
Tell your sitter where cameras are located and avoid recording private areas they may need to use.

Best spare litter tray
Savic Aseo Jumbo Litter Tray
One of the most useful holiday purchases may be an ordinary additional litter tray.
A large open tray such as the Savic Aseo Jumbo gives your cat more room to turn, dig and position themselves comfortably.
An additional tray can help when:
- you have more than one cat
- a cat sometimes refuses a dirty tray
- your usual tray has high daily use
- your cat is older
- the sitter visits at fixed times
- one cat blocks another cat’s access
PDSA’s general resource guideline is one litter tray per cat plus one additional tray.
That does not mean placing all the trays in a row. Cats may see trays beside each other as one shared toilet area. Spread them across suitable, quiet parts of the home.
Why I prefer a simple tray
Automatic self-cleaning litter machines are expensive and contain more components that can fail.
Some cats also dislike the noise, movement or enclosed design.
A large, familiar tray that your sitter can scoop and inspect provides useful information about urine and bowel movements.
Use your cat’s normal litter. A holiday is not the right time to test a heavily scented or unfamiliar alternative.

Best puzzle feeder for gentle enrichment
Trixie Cat Activity Fun Board
The Trixie Cat Activity Fun Board has several compartments and activities that encourage cats to use their paws and nose to retrieve pieces of dry food.
It can help provide low-pressure mental activity between visits.
Puzzle feeding can encourage cats to search and work for food rather than receiving every meal in an ordinary bowl. International Cat Care recommends introducing puzzle feeders gradually and making the first attempts easy enough to prevent frustration.
How to use it during a holiday
Introduce it several weeks before you travel.
Start with easily visible pieces of your cat’s normal dry food. Do not suddenly replace every ordinary meal with a difficult puzzle.
Ask the sitter to refill it with a measured amount taken from the cat’s normal daily allowance.
This is particularly important for cats that gain weight easily. Puzzle food is still food.
Safety
Leave only enrichment products that your cat has already used safely.
Fishing-rod toys, ribbons, loose string, elastic and feather wands should be stored away after supervised play because they can create entanglement or swallowing risks.

Should you use a Feliway diffuser?
Feliway Classic Diffuser
A pheromone diffuser may be helpful for some cats during changes to the household routine.
Feliway Classic is designed to reproduce a synthetic version of feline facial pheromone signals associated with a familiar environment.
I would describe it as optional support rather than an essential holiday product.
Some owners report that their cat appears more settled. Others notice little difference. It will not correct an unsuitable care arrangement, relieve boredom or replace human contact.
How to use it sensibly
Plug it in before your holiday rather than waiting until the morning you leave.
Place it in the room where your cat spends time, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not position it behind furniture or where airflow is obstructed.
Check that the refill contains enough liquid to cover your trip.
For a multi-cat home where tension between cats is the concern, a different formulation may be more appropriate. Ask your vet or a suitably qualified feline behaviour professional when you are unsure.
Do not use essential-oil diffusers as an alternative. Many essential oils can be harmful to cats.

Airtight food storage and labelled portions
Technology is not always the best investment.
An airtight food container, a measuring scoop and clearly labelled portions can remove much of the uncertainty from holiday feeding.
Leave:
- enough of your cat’s normal food for the booking
- a reasonable spare supply
- written quantities
- normal feeding times
- storage instructions
- approved treats
- information about food allergies or restrictions
- details of what should happen if your return is delayed
Do not change the food immediately before travelling.
If your cat develops vomiting, diarrhoea or refuses the new food, you do not want to be dealing with the problem from another country.

Leave a secure carrier where it can be reached
A strong cat carrier is not exciting, but it is an important part of holiday preparation.
Your sitter should be able to find it quickly if your cat needs veterinary attention.
A suitable carrier should be:
- secure
- well ventilated
- large enough for your cat
- easy to clean
- simple to open
- in good condition
- accessible without searching the loft or garage
A carrier with a removable top can make handling easier for nervous cats and may allow a vet to begin an examination while the cat remains in the lower half.
Do not lock the carrier in a cupboard that your sitter cannot access.
Leave a clean towel or familiar washable blanket nearby, along with your veterinary practice details.
Products I would not introduce just before travelling
The biggest mistake is buying several new devices immediately before your holiday.
Cats often need time to accept changes.
I would avoid introducing the following at the last minute:
A completely new automatic feeder
Your cat may fear the sound or moving lid. The mechanism may also dispense portions differently from what you expected.
A new water fountain as the only water source
Your cat may refuse to drink from it.
A self-cleaning litter machine
Your cat may avoid it, and your sitter may not know how to fix an error.
Difficult puzzle feeders
A puzzle should encourage activity, not prevent a hungry cat from reaching their food.
New calming supplements
Do not experiment with tablets, drops or supplements without veterinary guidance.
Unsupervised string toys
Store fishing-rod toys, ribbons, elastic and loose string safely between play sessions.
Remote equipment with no backup
Wi-Fi, power supplies, apps and pumps can fail. Keep ordinary bowls, written instructions and a spare plan.
Test your cat-care setup before you travel
Try to have everything in place at least two weeks before departure.
Longer may be needed for nervous cats or microchip feeders.
During the test period:
- use the feeder for normal meals
- confirm portion sizes
- test battery backup
- disconnect the Wi-Fi
- clean the fountain and pump
- check replacement filters
- make sure your cat uses each water source
- introduce any additional litter tray
- observe your cat using the puzzle feeder
- test the camera’s view and privacy settings
- show your sitter how everything works
- leave written instructions
Do a final check a few days before leaving.
Replace weak batteries, clean bowls, freeze ice packs and confirm that you have enough food, litter and medication.

For most healthy adult cats, I would focus on the following before buying expensive equipment:
- their usual food
- several clean water bowls
- enough litter
- at least one suitable litter tray per cat plus an additional tray where practical
- a secure carrier
- written instructions
- emergency contacts
- familiar safe toys
- regular visits from a reliable person
After that, choose products that solve a real problem.
A wet-food feeder may help maintain mealtimes.
A microchip feeder may stop food stealing.
A fountain may provide another drinking option.
A camera may offer reassurance.
A puzzle feeder may add gentle activity.
Buying everything does not automatically create better care.
The best setup is the one your cat already understands, and your sitter can manage confidently.
