Going away does not mean you need to fill your home with complicated cat technology.

Most cats need something much simpler:

• their usual food
• several sources of fresh water
• clean litter trays
• familiar sleeping and hiding places
• safe opportunities for play
• a predictable routine
• regular visits from somebody reliable

The right products can make holiday care easier. They can help maintain feeding times, provide backup water, keep food organised and give your cat something familiar to do between visits.

They cannot notice that your cat has stopped eating, become unwell, knocked over a water bowl or become trapped behind a closed door.

That is why I see the products in this guide as support for responsible cat care, not replacements for a cat sitter.

Choose equipment that solves a genuine problem in your cat’s existing routine.

From a cat sitter’s point of view, the best equipment is not necessarily the most advanced.

I favour products that are:

• easy to check
• easy to clean
• familiar to the cat
• straightforward for the sitter to operate
• supported by an ordinary backup
• unlikely to create additional stress
• suitable for the individual cat’s age and health

Before buying anything, ask what problem you are trying to solve.

Do you need to provide an early morning meal?

Does one cat steal another cat’s food?

Does your cat frequently knock over their water bowl?

Are you trying to provide safe enrichment between visits?

Would a larger litter tray be more useful than an automatic machine?

Buying a product because it looks impressive does not automatically improve your cat’s care.

Products should support visits, not replace them

Automatic feeders, cameras and water fountains are often advertised as ways to leave pets unattended.

That is not how I recommend using them.

A feeder may release food at the correct time, but it cannot confirm that your cat ate it.

A fountain may circulate water, but its pump can stop or its reservoir can run dry.

A camera may show your cat sleeping, but it cannot clean a litter tray, investigate vomit or assess whether your cat feels unwell.

Cats Protection’s holiday guidance advises arranging at least two visits each day, with very young cats, older cats and cats with certain health conditions potentially requiring more frequent attention.

The right arrangement depends on your individual cat, but equipment should never become the entire care plan.

Best automatic cat feeder for wet food

The Cat Mate C500 is one of the more practical options for cats that normally eat wet food.

• your cat normally eats several small meals

Points to consider

This feeder is intended for dry food.

Check that your cat’s normal kibble shape and size pass through the dispenser reliably.

The portion setting should also be measured rather than assumed. The amount described as one portion by the machine may not equal the portion you usually give your cat.

Test what happens when:

• the Wi-Fi is disconnected
• the power is turned off
• the food level becomes low
• the dispenser is used repeatedly
• your cat tries to reach inside it

Remote controls should not encourage additional feeding simply because your cat appears on camera and looks persuasive.

A timed feeder does not solve every feeding problem.

In some homes, the main difficulty is that one cat steals another cat’s food.

A fountain requires more cleaning than many owners expect.

Hair, food, saliva and mineral deposits can collect around the pump, filter and reservoir.

Your sitter needs instructions covering:

• how often to refresh the water
• whether the filter needs replacing
• where the cleaning brush is kept
• what to do if the pump stops

Introduce the fountain while you are home. Some cats use one immediately. Others avoid it until they have had time to investigate.

Always leave ordinary water bowls as backup

I would never leave a fountain as your cat’s only water source.

Pumps can stop.

Power supplies can become disconnected.

Filters can become blocked.

A nervous cat may simply decide that the fountain is suspicious.

Provide several sturdy water bowls in different locations.

PDSA’s cat-friendly home guidance recommends providing one of each essential resource per cat, plus an additional spare. Resources should also be spread around the home rather than grouped together.

Wide ceramic or stainless-steel bowls are generally stable and easy to clean.

Avoid positioning every water source beside the food bowl. Many cats prefer drinking water located away from food and litter areas.

Best camera for checking your cat

You do not necessarily need an expensive camera marketed specifically for pets.

A straightforward indoor security camera such as the Tapo C210 can provide:

• remote live viewing
• pan and tilt controls
• night vision
• motion notifications
• local memory-card storage
• privacy controls
• two-way audio

Place it where your cat normally eats, rests or walks through the room.

What a camera can do

A camera may reassure you that your cat has appeared for breakfast or is sleeping in a familiar place.

It may also help you notice that:

• a feeder has not opened
• a water bowl has been knocked over
• another animal has entered through the cat flap
• your cat has not appeared in an expected room
• the sitter has arrived at the agreed time

What a camera cannot do

A camera cannot reliably assess your cat’s health.

A cat sitting quietly may be relaxed, frightened or unwell.

You cannot smell vomit, inspect the litter tray, check hydration or properly assess the temperature of the room through an ordinary camera view.

I would also avoid repeatedly using the speaker to call your cat. Hearing your voice without being able to find you may confuse or unsettle some cats.

Tell your sitter where every camera is located. Do not record private areas they may reasonably need to use.

Best spare litter tray

One of the most useful holiday purchases may be an ordinary additional litter tray.

A large open tray such as the Savic Aseo Jumbo gives many cats more room to turn, dig and position themselves.

An additional tray can help when:

• you have more than one cat
• a cat sometimes refuses a dirty tray
• your normal tray receives heavy use
• your cat is older or less mobile
• your sitter visits at fixed times
• one cat blocks another cat’s access
• your cat has a choice of toileting locations

A useful starting point is one litter tray per cat plus one additional tray.

Do not put every tray in a line. Cats may view trays placed directly beside one another as one toilet area rather than genuinely separate resources.

Why a simple tray can be better

Automatic self-cleaning litter machines are expensive and contain more parts that can fail.

Some cats also dislike their noise, movement or enclosed shape.

A familiar tray that the sitter can scoop and inspect provides useful information about urine and bowel movements.

Use your cat’s normal litter. A holiday is not the time to test an unfamiliar or heavily scented alternative.

Do you need a litter mat?

A washable litter mat can help contain litter tracked outside the tray.

It may be particularly useful when:

• the tray is positioned on a hard floor
• your cat digs enthusiastically
• several trays are being maintained
• your sitter needs to sweep the area each day
• your cat uses a lightweight litter

Choose a mat that lies flat and does not create a trip hazard.

Avoid forcing an elderly or nervous cat to walk across a texture they dislike. Leave the mat in place for several weeks before your holiday so you can confirm that it does not discourage tray use.

Best puzzle feeder for gentle enrichment

The Trixie Cat Activity Fun Board contains several sections that encourage cats to use their paws and nose to retrieve pieces of food.

It can provide low-pressure mental activity between visits.

Puzzle feeding can be helpful for cats that enjoy searching or working for part of their food. It should not prevent a hungry or nervous cat from eating.

International Cat Care recommends introducing puzzle feeders gradually and making the first attempts easy enough to avoid frustration.

How to use it during a holiday

Introduce it several weeks before travelling.

Start with easily visible pieces of your cat’s normal dry food.

Continue providing some food in an ordinary bowl while your cat learns how the puzzle works.

Ask the sitter to refill it with a measured amount taken from the cat’s normal daily allowance.

Puzzle food is still food. It should not become additional calories added on top of the usual meals.

Safety

Leave only enrichment products that your cat has already used safely.

Fishing-rod toys, ribbons, loose string, elastic and feather wands should be stored away after supervised play because they can create entanglement or swallowing risks.

A pheromone diffuser may offer additional support for some cats during a change in household routine.

Feliway Classic is designed to reproduce a synthetic version of feline facial pheromone signals associated with familiar surroundings.

I would describe it as an optional product rather than an essential holiday purchase.

Some owners feel their cat appears more settled. Others notice little difference.

It will not correct an unsuitable care arrangement, provide enrichment or replace human contact.

How to use it sensibly

Plug it in before your holiday rather than on the morning you leave.

Place it in a room your cat regularly uses and follow the manufacturer’s positioning instructions.

Check that the refill contains enough liquid to cover the full period.

For a multi-cat household where tension between cats is the concern, ask your vet or a suitably qualified feline behaviour professional whether a different product or plan would be more appropriate.

Airtight food storage and measured portions

Technology is not always the best investment.

An airtight container, digital kitchen scale, measuring scoop and clearly labelled portions can remove much of the uncertainty from holiday feeding.

Leave:

• enough of your cat’s usual food for the booking
• a reasonable spare supply
• exact quantities
• normal feeding times
• storage instructions
• information about permitted treats
• allergy or dietary information
• instructions for uneaten food
• a plan in case your return is delayed

Avoid vague instructions such as “give a handful” or “top the bowl up”.

Measured portions make it easier for your sitter to notice whether your cat is eating more or less than normal.

Do not change your cat’s food immediately before travelling unless your vet has advised a necessary change.

If your cat develops vomiting, diarrhoea or refuses the new food, you do not want to manage the problem from another country.

Leave a secure carrier where it can be reached

A reliable cat carrier is not the most exciting purchase in this guide, but it may be one of the most important.

Your sitter should be able to find it quickly if your cat needs veterinary attention.

A suitable carrier should be:

• secure
• well ventilated
• large enough for the individual cat
• easy to clean
• straightforward to open
• in good condition
• stored somewhere accessible

A carrier with a removable top can make handling easier for some nervous or less mobile cats. It may also allow a veterinary examination to begin while the cat remains in the lower section.

Do not lock the carrier in a loft, garage or cupboard your sitter cannot access.

Leave a clean towel or familiar washable blanket nearby, together with your veterinary practice details.

Products for senior cats

Older cats may need a simpler setup rather than more technology.

Useful adjustments can include:

• a low-entry litter tray
• stable food and water bowls
• bowls positioned where they are easy to reach
• water in several locations
• non-slip mats on slippery flooring
• easy access to familiar resting places
• a secure carrier with a removable top
• more frequent physical checks

Do not assume an automatic or elevated product is easier simply because it is advertised for older pets.

Arthritis, dental discomfort, reduced eyesight, hearing loss and medical conditions can all affect what is suitable.

Products for kittens

Kittens need more supervision than healthy adult cats.

Avoid relying on equipment to reduce visits.

Be particularly careful with:

• elastic
• feathers that detach easily

Products I would not introduce just before travelling

The biggest mistake is buying several new devices immediately before your holiday.

Cats often need time to accept changes.

I would avoid introducing the following at the last minute.

A completely new automatic feeder

Your cat may be frightened by the motor, moving lid or unfamiliar bowl.

A fountain as the only water source

Your cat may refuse to drink from it.

A self-cleaning litter machine

Your cat may avoid it, and your sitter may not know how to resolve an error.

A difficult puzzle feeder

A puzzle should encourage activity, not prevent your cat from reaching their meal.

A new calming supplement

Do not experiment with tablets, drops or supplements without veterinary guidance.

Unsupervised string toys

Store fishing-rod toys, ribbons, elastic and loose string safely between supervised play sessions.

Remote equipment with no backup

Wi-Fi, apps, power supplies, pumps and batteries can fail.

Keep ordinary bowls, written instructions and a simple backup plan.

Test your setup before you travel

Try to have new equipment in place at least two weeks before departure.

Nervous cats and cats learning to use microchip feeders may need considerably longer.

During the test period:

• use the feeder for normal meals
• confirm the actual portion sizes
• test the battery backup
• disconnect the Wi-Fi
• clean the fountain and pump
• check that replacement filters are available
• confirm that your cat uses every water source
• introduce the spare litter tray
• observe your cat using any puzzle feeder
• test the camera’s view and privacy controls
• show your sitter how everything works
• leave written instructions
• confirm what should happen if a product fails

Carry out another check a few days before leaving.

Replace weak batteries, wash bowls, freeze ice packs and make sure there is enough food, litter and medication.

After that, choose products that solve a real problem.

Buying everything does not automatically create better care.

The best setup is the one your cat already understands, and your sitter can manage confidently.
